One day in 2016 our lives were turned upside down. Our seemingly healthy son, and Mantis BBQ co-founder, was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease that attacks the kidneys. After 2 1/2 years of tried and failed treatments, followed by months of debilitating dialysis, he ultimately underwent a successful transplant with a kidney donated by his uncle. Yet, the challenges were far from over.
Following the biggest roller coaster of our lives, we got an education that we never could have foreseen. We learned that although dialysis is a stop gap, it is a huge debilitating life disruptor, and while a transplanted kidney enables our son and others to continue life not connected to a machine, it also means surviving by taking an enormous daily cocktail of medications that suppress your immune system. There are more than 100,000 patients in America on the kidney transplant list fighting for one of the 21,000 donor organs, and even for those lucky enough to receive a transplant, the kidney they waited and longed for does not last forever. The only permanent solution is the promise of an artificial kidney.
For years friends and family have asked us to sell our BBQ sauce so we have decided to combine a great product with a great cause, joining passion with purpose. For every bottle of Mantis BBQ sauce sold, 10% of the proceeds will go directly to The Kidney Project at the University of California, San Francisco where development of this artificial life changer is underway.
